A cosmetic consultation addresses an appearance concern where nothing is medically wrong. It produces a plan and realistic timeframes. Insurance does not cover it.
Plenty of appointments turn out to be both. Someone booking about acne scarring usually needs the active acne managed medically first.
What the Examination Involves
Skin is examined directly, under good light, and often with a dermatoscope — a magnifying device with polarised light that shows structures beneath the surface that the naked eye cannot resolve.
That matters most for moles and pigmented lesions. Features invisible from a metre away become visible at magnification, which is how a benign lesion gets distinguished from one worth removing. It is also why photographs sent by WhatsApp cannot substitute for an appointment, however good the camera.
We usually examine more than the area you came about. Distribution tells us a great deal — a rash on the elbows and knees suggests something different from the same rash in the skin folds.
Investigations That Sometimes Follow
Not every appointment ends with a diagnosis. Some end with a test.
- Skin scraping or nail clipping — sent for fungal analysis, because fungal infection and eczema look similar and respond to opposite treatments
- Biopsy — a small sample under local anaesthetic, where the diagnosis needs microscopy or a lesion warrants removal and analysis
- Patch testing — for suspected contact allergy, applied over several days with readings at intervals

What to Bring
Photographs help more than patients expect, particularly for anything intermittent. A rash that has settled by your appointment is difficult to diagnose from description alone.
Bring a complete medication list, including supplements and anything bought without prescription. Bring the actual products you apply to your skin, or photographs of their labels. Bring previous results, biopsy reports or specialist letters if you have them.
Come with the area accessible. A nail concern means no polish. A scalp concern means no heavy product. If the concern is on your back, wear something easy to change out of.
How Long It Takes
Allow thirty to forty-five minutes. A single straightforward lesion takes less. A widespread rash with a long history, or a full mole check, takes the upper end.
If a procedure is appropriate on the day and you are prepared for it, small removals and some treatments can be done in the same visit. Anything needing planning, consent time or preparation gets booked separately.
